It’s Duck Season

Remembering back to the Loony Tunes morning cartoons as a young child the bit with Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny saying what season it is comes to bear. Well without a doubt it’s duck season here in the NW despite Daffy’s prompting towards rabbit season.

With ducks coming down the flyways in droves many of us are up before the sun trying to get the best spots for ourselves. Dusting off old gear and unwrapping the very latest in outdoor tech the hunter sallies forth into the dark with a trusty dog and shotgun hoping to get a limit before work. The pace of technology seems to speed along developments for getting limits but the old timers have some tricks up their sleeve that us younger guys would love to know.

Things like the right shotgun for example can make or break a day in the field or marsh. Sometimes we take the shotgun for granted, thinking that the newest shell flavor will do all the heavy lifting for us. This is not really the case, the shells will only pattern as good as the shotgun will allow. Watching Warren or Shaun shoot shotguns you forget just how hard it can be to get on target as ducks literally fall from the sky around them.

The old reliable Remington 870 in Warren’s hands is like a painter’s brush to canvas. Warren paints the skies and the ducks are the canvas, the shells are the medium and the end result is a masterpiece duck dinner. Trying to find Shaun on a blustery day like today is next to impossible. Cammoed out in the latest Sitka Gear Shaun blends in to his surroundings, calling so realistically you’d never know he was there if it weren’t for the bang and falling ducks.

What Shaun and Warren bring to the duck game has been wrought out of the mud and years of bad weather culminating in the unparalleled knowledge base as it stands today.Three generations of hunting ducks in the NW area pays dividends when grandpa, dad and daughter rise before the sun. I know I either want to be right next to them in the blind or on the other side of the unit. If I’m next to them I’ll cleanup, but if I’m over a blind or two it means I don’t get any ducks at all so then you had better be on the extreme end of the unit to win.

What the guys have casually forgotten is more than I’ll ever know. Thankfully I can catch up with them at The Gun Room Inc. and glean a few tricks. Do yourself a solid and stop in to see Warren or Shaun to get the best gear and guns for the game you are hunting. Tell em Mike sent ya!
