Smith & Wesson Performance Center R8

Smooth……..Nimble……..Balanced……..

Eight*Shots*Of*Steam*Rolling*.357*Magnum*Power*!!!!!!!!

It’s a Smith & Wesson Performance Center R8 of course! While not a new handgun it’s becoming one of the most coveted revolvers anywhere. Do a web search and you see people putting it into video games with their own homemade code. There are You Tube videos, songs, reviews and multitudes of blogs written about the little known revolver that could.

Lauded as a tactical point man gun with rails that’ll take what ever gadget is trendy on the top strap and barrel it seemly has everything a person needs in one gun. This is probably why you don’t see a great many real ones in the wild.

Smith & Wesson’s Performance Center spends a bit of time tuning the action until it’s smoother than whipped butter. Two staging becomes a mere thought and very positive with the trigger break as crisp as a new dollar bill. Single stage shooting is unlike any other revolver, the lead is coaxed out of the pre tensioned barrel with such finesse you hardly know you are shooting the power house .357 Magnum round.

You are surprised when the air is torn asunder in a ball of furious blue flame making the targets fall out of fear if not the authoritative mass of it’s blistering projectile. The experience makes you giddy with endorphins the first and every time you shoot it. When you first see the Smith & Wesson R8 your brain says oh it’s just another revolver, you don’t even realize you’ve already picked it up and are thumbing the hammer. It’s massive, but, ….dare I say…light? It feels like you slipped through a mirror into a land of weird juxtaposition. How can it be so light yet so positive, so awe inspiring?

By now everyone else is looking at you at the gun counter, it’s very much like you discovered something new, shiny. The tribe grows restless, hoping you won’t buy it before they get a chance to handle it themselves. Every gun buyer has felt it but not like this.

The R8 connects to everyone who handles it in some unexplainable way. You can see it in their faces, questioning everything they know about what a gun is supposed to be. For some reason they feel like they’ve been lied to their whole lives. Revolvers are supposed to be heavy, they are supposed to be lacking capacity, they are supposed to be slow to reload. WHAT GIVES!

Everyone knows the end of the story but you, you’re still figuring out how you got home at this point. Reaching frantically to mount a light on the R8’s barrel, and stealing the nearest example off of your now extinct semi-auto. Watching from the corner your home defense shotgun cowers in fear of it’s own inevitable demise. Your match pistol snickers until it realizes you are walking towards it, hand out stretched to snatch that glass right off like you are stealing it’s crown. Sure you could be a purist and use the incredibly accurate iron V notch sights, you can even leave the top strap rail off, but why?

If you thought you heard your house sigh chances are you did. Everyone breathes easier with the Smith & Wesson R8 on their side. Everything you could ever need for a home defense system the R8 delivers in a very serious gun that is all business. Make no mistakes this gun is absolutely terrifying to look upon with the muzzle pointed at you. The psychological effect on a criminal facing it must be debilitating.

The Smith & Wesson Performance Center’s R8 is cutting edge, it doesn’t even seem to be of this world, but it exists. If you’re real lucky you may spot one in the wild but whatever you do don’t let someone else see it first!

Schofield Pistol

Since the very beginning the Schofield Pistol was revolutionary in it’s design and approach to the problems early Americans faced in the Wild West. The Schofield Pistol was designed to be loaded in the saddle by U.S. Calvary soldiers as the typical pistol had to eject and load one cartridge at time through a loading gate making the process difficult while on horseback.

General Schofield’s ingenious solution was as elegant as it was simple, simply actuate the rear sight release latch and shake the pistol open. The shells were ejected all at once and able to be immediately reloaded six at a time rather than one at a time through a loading gate.

The Schofield Pistol’s cylinder spins freely at the 1/4 cock position of the hammer and also while the action is fully open, further allowing access to any of the cylinder’s chambers or all at once. A Skilled shooter could eject and reload faster than any other single action revolver of it’s time even and rival some of the tactical revolvers of today.

It’s been said Annie Oakley used a Schofield, and so did Pat Garret, Billy The Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Wells Fargo, and many others.

If you appreciate innovation and understated excellence you will for sure take a shine to the Schofield Pistol. The Gun Room Inc. usually has more than one so you have a choice, and if we don’t we can order up one special just for you in your choice of available calibers.

More and more people are coming to the 1911 platform for the 10mm chambering and the manufacturers are taking notice. In my 1911 group on Facebook flocks of people are discovering what a select few have known all along, and that’s the 1911 in 10mm makes a great hunting pistol as well as a tremendously accurate shooter.

Night Vision For Everyone

It’s not too often the crew here at The Gun room Inc. gets jazzed about another widget but today was different. Today the little kids came out of us all when we were handed a second gen night vision scope. This is not the old school Vietnam era starlight scope of yore, this is new school digital with multiple modes and reticles and it even works in the day time without a hitch.

This writer was more than impressed when I went to the pitch black basement and touched the power button. I was imagining clearing a bad guy hideout in the dark when someone turned on the lights. Surprise the unit didn’t washout and with a simple flip of the cover the integrated pin hole made the whole operation pretty tacticool!

While these scopes are intended for hogs and bad guys they make night vision available to the average guy for pennies on the dollar. If we would have had this tech back when I was in the service I think some things would have gone much better.

features include:

  • day or night use
  • high optical magnification
  • built in 810nm LED IR illuminator (laser illuminators / target designators on some models)
  • video output (rca)
  • camera resolution 656 x 492
  • selectable electronic reticles
  • field of view 22.5ft @100 yards
  • max detection range 130yd
  • magnification 4.6
  • objective lens diameter 42mm
  • eye relief 2.36 inches
  • 30mm tube diameter
  • 2 x AA batteries
  • weight 23.6 oz

These night vision scopes are priced to fit in everyone’s budget and The Gun Room Inc. has them in stock today.

Steyr S9A1 9MM Pistol

If you are new to hand guns or are a combat veteran with multiple tours the Steyr S9A1 may be for you. Steyr’s legend starts back well over 100 years ago, in fact the family and region is known for quality weapons dating back as far as the 1200s. So what makes the futuristic looking Steyr S9A1 any different than say the flavor of the week polymer (plastic) pistol?

From the novel triangular sights, to the grip angle, and low bore axis the Steyr S9A1 pistol is an instinctive shooter that requires very little effort to get on target for that first shot and following shots. The Steyr S9A1s’ design allows for a high grip ensuring positive muzzle control for even the smallest to the largest of hands.

Ten rounds in the magazine means this is a compact pistol with plenty of power for those shooters who follow the spray and pray technique. One thing I should note is that the Steyr is an easy to point and shoot pistol and one can’t help but make great shots like a pro so forget about spray and pray. Your shooting technique will improve with the Steyr whether you want it to or not. You can’t help but put rounds in the 10 ring with a Steyr and your friends with pistols from that other well known Austrian firm will get a case of severe envy.

We fed every kind of ammo that we had at the shop thru one of ours and found that the Steyr S9A1 gobbled it up and asked for more without a single stoppage. The trigger pull on the Steyr S9A1 is about as good as it gets for a striker fire type of firearm and uses a much better trigger safety than on other striker fire pistols we shoot for training and recreation.

As for carrying, the Steyr S9A1 makes for easy concealment whether inside the waistband or outside depending on your outfit and some concealed carry coats seem to be made with the Steyr in mind.

if you’re curious about the pistol that looks like it came from a silver screen sci-fi flick come on down to The Gun Room Inc. on SE Foster Rd. in Portland Oregon and see one for your self.

Here’s a random video from someone else talking about the Steyr S9A1 so you won’t have to take our word for it.

Milo’s Pic Of The Week

This whole last week Milo took some time off to get in a bit of quality range time with the Smith & Wesson 640-1 Pro Series.

What can Milo say but “Pretty Bird” he absolutely loves this pistol, this work of Smith & Wesson’s Performance Center high art. Milo loves that it shoots +P ammo non-stop, and with the cut out cylinder Milo uses moon clips for his quick tactical (or tacticlaw in Milo’s case) reloads. The Smith & Wesson Performance Center 640-1 Pro Series is meant for easy carry, easy concealment, and easy target acquisition due to the Trijicon night sights Smith & Wesson saw fit to include.

I’m not sure Milo’ even ate any crackers or peanuts this whole last week. Milo and Mike have been at it for days and they both have this pistol. If you are more of a sparrow than a parrot and don’t want to shoot full house .357cal you can also shoot .38 special which greatly reduces felt recoil and knocks the edges off some of the bark.

Smith & Wesson Specs from their page below:

Milo’s Pick Of The Week Remington 700 Lapua Magnum

The first week of February always has Milo preoccupied with setting up a long range shooter for when the weather breaks here in the Northwest. Milo’s preoccupation this season is with the Remington 700 action chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. While other lame ducks are still trying to hop up the old rifle with a wildcat cartridge Milo takes the off the shelf approach and goes with Remington’s tried and true Model 700.

To say Remington’s 700 action is robust would be an understatement. The Gun Room Inc. is Remington’s Pro Custom Shop in Portland, we get the really really good rifles here in the calibers Milo demands for his bird brained shooting drills.

Milo used to shoot the Barrett .50 cal but now prefers the .338 Lapua Magnum because the bullets are easier to carry and easier to come by.

To get your own 338 Lapua Magnum come see Milo at The Gun Room Inc., call us today (503)777-3931 and get that extra special model made just for you.
