The headline is a bit misleading, but it still holds merit. This morning when I put my feet into my boots and put on my trusty Stormy Kromer jacket I had to decide between my toque or my Stormy Kromer hat, the wind was too cold and too strong for my ball cap. In the end I opted for the Stormy Kromer hat, it had a loss guarantee from Stormy Kromer and besides that it functioned as the ball cap I wanted to wear but offered the warmth of the toque.
Those of you who are from the more Southern latitudes will be wondering what a toque is, think knit hat or beanie and you have the picture. While pretty good in the snow most offer no sun protection for your face like a billed hat does, and a billed hat is the type that gets blown off your head and offers no warmth. Stormy Kromer checks off all the boxes so it’s what gets worn when the wind is up and the chill is down.
If you’re a high latitude sailor or hunter chances are you probably know what a Stormy Kromer hat is, those below 45N who wear them are mostly the younger crowd who see it as a fashion statement rather than necessary gear. The fashion thing I get, but I’m more of a function guy, Stormy Kromer definitely has some pretty fashionable offerings but man it’s the go to function wise.
As a technical fabric nothing beats good old fashioned wool sheared from actual sheep to keep you warm and happy, wet or dry. I’m not talking about sublimated dye patterned polyester, I’m talking dyed in the wool gear for outdoor activity. It reminds me of the difference between my old summer dress white uniform and my dress blues, the dress whites were polyester, and my dress blues were wool. I definitely preferred the dress blues on watch or out on liberty over the dress whites. Did I mention that Stormy Kromer is made in the US, can you say that about your hat or jacket?
It’s true that when you buy a Stormy Kromer hat that you can go on their website and register that hat to take advantage of the free replacement program. If you lose your Stormy Kromer they’ll replace it for free for one year, that’s how sure they are of their product and it’s ability. Stormy Kromer makes a pretty good toque as well, their women’s mohair and wool blend beanie is my favorite because it’s so soft. Who cares if it’s made for women? I wear it when the snow drifts high and the days are dark and short, it doesn’t make my head itch after wearing it all day like an acrylic hat does. My Stormy Kromer coat and vest are about as good as it gets, and the Stormy Kromer hat selection is large enough that I always have something that looks as good as it works.
I get my Stormy Kromer gear at The Gun Room Inc., but I really haven’t had to get any since 1994 with the exception of a couple of new styles of SK hats. My originals are still working as good today as back when I first bought them all those years ago.
Realizing it’s officially summer and toasty outside this posting may find you folks wondering if I’m crazy or not talking about wool hats. Hear me out because it’ll make sense in a minute.
Not too long ago I found myself looking for my old Stormy Kromer hat to wear out on a SAR mission. It was blustery and cold with a wind that wouldn’t stop that felt like it came from all directions! Snow was mixed in with rain and sleet making the day on the Zodiac a miserable one. It was at this point I remember a young lady borrowing my old Stormy Kromer and not bringing it back one winter morning.
I had been on the look out for another hat that was all business with all day comfort ever since then. Considering that my missing hat was my grandpa’s and had been worn for millions of miles in the woods and on the water I figured it was nothing but a memory.
I stumbled into The Gun Room in Portland after a media mission and low and behold to my amazement was the exact same hat, in my size, ready to go to a good home. I bought it on the spot and put in in my rescue bag post haste! Now when I’m able I’m going back to Portland and visiting The Gun Room again to get the Stormy Kromer jacket and vest for my hunting adventures.
Thanks for stopping in! It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing about your adventures.

For over 90+ years, LOWA BOOTS have been the finest outdoor boots in the world for hunters, climbers, mountaineers, hikers,etc.. Their attention to detail has earned a reputation for building the world’s most comfortable and durable boots since 1923.
The Gun Room Inc. is known for hunting and fine firearms and carries Lowa boots for edging those mountains and hills where some of the toughest hunts happen. When you are working thru some knock down or a cut unit you know that the wrong boot means swollen ankles and feet and usually buying another pair of boots after an unsuccessful hunt.
This writer has been using the same pair of Lowa boots himself for about a decade now and can’t even fathom how he did it without them. After getting out of the military, I thought that the best boot for these missions was the tried and true paratrooper boot, until a high country big game hunt with a friend wearing Lowa boots that is. Lets just say all of the smack talking about him not serving and blah blah blah this and that banter meant I ate crow for supper that night. One of the toughest parts of the hunt was a very high and steep ridge where you had to cut every step of the way with your boots side hilling to a ledge where we could take a break and glass for the meal of the day. Suffice it to say my military tough boots came apart and I had to go back empty-handed, sore, cold and wet.
Fast forward a decade and I still have my first pair of Lowa Boots for my big game hunts and now I also have the tactical boots Lowa makes for my training evolutions. The foot wear kings at Lowa have made shoes and boots for just about any activity outdoors and have done it better than everyone else. Once you try Lowa Boots you’ll never look back unless you need to find your friend.
Lowa Boots are in stock for men and women at The Gun Room Inc. on SE Foster Rd. in Portland Oregon.
Give them a call (503)777-3931 or better yet stop by and see their Lowa Boots for yourself.

Big box retailers don’t understand the game, terrain or conditions in their areas and most often times lack the correct patterns for their hunts, they simply try to sell units in stock period. Come on in to The Gun Room Inc. and talk to someone who actually hunts and is very successful, rather than some big box store where the salesman thinks hunting is something you do while driving or in a video game. We know what it takes when you draw a once per life tag on a coveted unit in public land, and we know what you need to win.
